007 - The Family Madrigal (Encanto, Part II)

Welcome to TED Talks by Lex (Monday edition)! For the second part of our Encanto series, Alexis makes a lot of interesting observations about La Familia Madrigal. We talk about the things we do (and don’t do) in our families that make life difficult: keeping secrets, being in denial, and trying to control our kids, when all we can really do is be a bumper rail. We talk about how everyone has a Bruno in their family, and that it’s okay to be a family weirdo.

We also talk about how to be supportive of our family members and their gifts–that other people winning does not mean you are losing! Perfectionism is a way to hide your true gifts, and when we bring our whole selves to the table, we all shine so much brighter.

Don’t put yourself in a box, don’t stay stuck in one identity because it’s safe, and don’t settle for mediocre. Our families might make us crazy sometimes, but in a way, we are all Madrigals: many voices and strengths, but one in purpose and heart.

Our Better Betty Challenge for this holiday season: Be mindful of where you fit into your family, and what pitfalls you’re getting into. Have uncomfortable conversations in a healthy and productive way.
