033 - Fugly February
Be prepared, Bettys and Jacks–there’s a lot of Valentines-related venting in this episode. And laughing. Mary’s already sexy alto is even sexier (i.e., lower, with more coughing) because of whatever crappy virus is going around right now.
This “magical month of adoration” is a little more complicated for Alexis and Mary, so we have dubbed this FUGLY FEBRUARY. According to Merriam-Webster, the term “fugly” was first used in 1980, but it came into our consciousness with Mean Girls (2004). We talk a lot about the expectations we have around Valentine’s day, and how for Mary it’s a double whammy because it’s also Benji’s birthday.
So we’re exhausted, we’re Vitamin D deficient (not a metaphor, but we do talk about being “horndogs”), and we’re both way out of balance. Mary spent most of the week fighting with her husband about how to “fix” it. We’re not computers, so please don’t try to ctrl+alt+del your way out of this one–we’re pretty sure we both need a whole system upgrade.
Our Better Betty Challenge for this week (this month!) is to not write off February as fugly. It’s a good time for reassessment of WHY we do what we do, WHO we are actually doing it for (pro-tip: It’s me. Hi. I’m the problem–it’s me), and WHAT we are avoiding by placing all of these unrealistic expectations upon ourselves.
