Midlife Cry, Sis (Formerly known as The Bettys Podcast)
Welcome to the Midlife Cry, Sis podcast! We are Alexis and Mary, and we want to help you: to feel loved and accepted in your home and community, to not feel alone in your emotional struggles, to embrace who you really are, to let go of expectations, and to channel your inner Queen and LET HER SHINE. Our mission is to help women (and those who love them) to find light in dark places, to empower them with confidence in God and in themselves, and to appreciate their own journeys through life and faith. These podcasts are wide-ranging conversations about love, family, and embracing our pasts while envisioning a future where we’re not afraid to light it up, rise above, and get through this crazy thing called midlife. Are you ready for a good laugh and/or cry? You’re in the right place, Queen.

Hello, friends and fellow lovely messes! We thought we’d give you a bonus episode this week, in case you need some company while you’re cooking up those Thanksgiving turkeys (“slay!”). Part of this episode is ‘light and fluffy,’ like Lexy’s divine mashed potatoes, and sometimes we have a little more depth, like Mary’s amazing Sausage Apple Stuffing. As Lexy says, “it’s fun, and it’s great, but it does take a toll.”
Lex talks a little about her superpower of disassociating, and how she had a very serious moment contemplating suicide. She talks about “the pit,” and how we all may find ourselves in a place that requires superhuman strength to climb out. Each time we reach up toward that little glimmer of light, we build muscle and momentum.
Lexy talks about how gratitude journals have changed her life, and her marriage. We hope you’ll get nitty gritty in your personal journals; be real, kind, and patient with yourself, and find something to hold on to–something that will give you hope, which will lead to gratitude, and then to abundance.
Our Better Betty Challenge for today is to let people know you are grateful for them. Be specific in how they have helped you, and write a real Thank You note if you can. We believe that gratitude will get us out of our pits faster than anything else.
If you are having thoughts of suicide, please reach out to someone. Always remember you can call or text 988 to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline 24/7.

Today Mary and Alexis talk about accepting a new energy, embracing failures, following clues, and shedding our skin (and sometimes our clothes!). We discuss the 2013 film “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” (currently available to stream on HoBo Max).
“I had this idea of who I wanted to be and what I wanted to do.” Many of us may feel like Walter Mitty sometimes–like life has passed us by, but there are lots of ways to feel alive. One of Mary’s favorite ways to get out from the daily grind is to attend concerts, and she humble-brags about where she has traveled to see her favorite bands. Surprising nobody, Lex has more quotes from Dr. Gabor Mate, and we all love David Bowie (“He’s so sexy . . . You think the ‘time to make the doughnuts’ guy is sexy”) and his Space Oddity, conveniently located in Draper, Utah.
Listen in to find out more about what a “Snow Leopard Moment” is, and how to stop living in your head and just start living life. You don’t have to jump out of airplanes or fly into volcanoes to feel alive, but maybe you should consider rolling around in the snow in a swimsuit on New Year’s Eve.
Here’s a link to the Ed Mylett episode we talked about.
Though “beautiful things don’t ask for attention,” we would appreciate it if you’d like, follow, subscribe, and all of the things.

Welcome to TED Talks by Lex (Monday edition)! For the second part of our Encanto series, Alexis makes a lot of interesting observations about La Familia Madrigal. We talk about the things we do (and don’t do) in our families that make life difficult: keeping secrets, being in denial, and trying to control our kids, when all we can really do is be a bumper rail. We talk about how everyone has a Bruno in their family, and that it’s okay to be a family weirdo.
We also talk about how to be supportive of our family members and their gifts–that other people winning does not mean you are losing! Perfectionism is a way to hide your true gifts, and when we bring our whole selves to the table, we all shine so much brighter.
Don’t put yourself in a box, don’t stay stuck in one identity because it’s safe, and don’t settle for mediocre. Our families might make us crazy sometimes, but in a way, we are all Madrigals: many voices and strengths, but one in purpose and heart.
Our Better Betty Challenge for this holiday season: Be mindful of where you fit into your family, and what pitfalls you’re getting into. Have uncomfortable conversations in a healthy and productive way.
Brene Brown: “Shame is a focus on self; guilt is a focus on behavior.” Shame is, “I am bad.” Guilt is, “I did something bad.” (from her 2012 TED Talk)

Today's podcast is about an incredible family with extra special powers, and Mary gets caught monologuing. No, we’re not talking about the Parrs or the Maximoff twins; we’re talking about another Disney dynasty: the Madrigals from Encanto!
In this first episode of a two-part series, Mary breaks down (literally–she cries at least three times, and the internet recording goes out as well) some of the songs from the soundtrack. Mary also spends some time explaining the characters in the family, and each individual’s special gift.
Come join us for an episode “where all the people are fantastical and magical,” where we talk about our own gifts (and our struggles to recognize them), our purpose in family, community and within various institutions, and we’ll throw in a little Mumford & Sons and Brene Brown for good measure.
Follow us on Instagram @thebettyspodcast! And please leave a comment telling us three things you do well, and gifts you’d like to work on. We want to celebrate YOUR gifts!

Hold on, LOVERS–we recorded this podcast episode in Lexy’s kitchen on the night before we launched, and we kinda go off the rails. Lexy’s teenage daughter (and Mary’s niece) Phoebe join us for a Fearless multi-generational discussion about Taylor Swift, her new (and old) albums, and Taylor’s effect on the music industry. We also Speak Now about Mary’s parade-related trauma (it’s me, I’m the problem), Dave & Lexy’s Love Story, and even Phoebe’s Reputation.
Long Story Short–join us for some Crazier “hot-tub conversation” and Mastermind (MIND! MASTERMIND!) your way into another hilarious installment of the Bettys podcast.
Zencastr is what we usually use to record. Please excuse the sound issues from shared microphones and new podcasters. This is Me Trying.
Here’s a link to the Hobbit House where we stayed last summer–tell Dr. Zzs that Mary sent you. It’s Nice to Have a Friend!

Are you still hungover from Halloween? Have you ever wanted a crash-course in Harry Potter? Well, we’ve got the podcast for you! Mary channels her inner Hermione (Heroine?) to teach Lexy a little (or a lot) about the Wizarding World. Lex brings the magic, showing that she knows more than she thinks she does. She's also very good at catching those context clues, not unlike Harry with a golden snitch.
Thanks for joining us on this follow-up to our Halloween IG live, where we braved some Bertie Botts Every Flavour Beans and announced the winners of our Launch Day giveaway. We appreciate you being here from the very beginning! We love your feedback, so please let us know how we’re doing, and how we can better serve you!

Welcome to our third episode! We're excited that you're still listening!
Today is Halloween! We talk about our family Halloween costumes, and we'll share some of our favorites from the past few years. Check out our Instagram for Mary's favorite picture of all time.
Lexy talks about a trip to the doctor with two of her boys, and they discuss the greatness of pooping. And she talks about an epic hike she and those boys took to help "clear their cookies."
And of course, if we're talking about cookies, we'll have to talk about COOKIES, like Lexy's favorite, E.L.Fudge.

If you guessed that we're talking about Frozen in the second episode of the Bettys podcast, you would be correct. And you're our kind of people. Even if you didn't, you're definitely welcome here!
We take some major life lessons from Frozen (specifically Frozen 2, which Mary thinks is a MASTERPIECE). We also talk a bit about disaster movies, though we don't learn as much from those except how to not freak out when the world is ending. We also realize there is a "Churro Effect" when it comes to Disneyland (and becoming princesses, specifically) and we are pretty freaking susceptible to it.
We are not sponsored by Disney, nor do we own the rights to any of their content, but we are pretty big fans and we accept payment in the form of Dole Whips.
